Sioux City Brews

In his presentation titled, Sioux City Brews, Matt Anderson, Curator of History at the Sioux City Public Museum, will trace the history of brewing in Sioux City back to 1860 when Rudolph Selzer established Northwest Iowa's first brewery. With the notable exception of periods when state or federal law prohibited the manufacture of alcoholic beverages, brewing was a significant component of Sioux City's industrial economy between 1860 and 1960. Brewing re-emerged in 1998 with the opening of Sioux City's first microbrewery. Today, local beer enthusiasts enjoy the products of three small local breweries in Sioux City, along with those of microbreweries in LeMars, Iowa, and Jefferson, South Dakota.
