  4. Medical Attention
Medical attention after a sexual assault can be very beneficial, even if you do not wish to collect evidence. Sexual assault nurses are trained to check for injuries and exposure to sexually transmitted infections and can collect forensic evidence.  Evidence collected within 120 hours is most effective, but fluids, hair samples and DNA can be collected beyond that. Even if you have washed or bathed, evidence can often still be obtained. If you are still wearing any clothes worn during the incident, wear them to the hospital, but bring a change of clothes, as the hospital will keep what you are wearing as evidence. If you changed clothes, bring the ones you were wearing during the incident to the hospital in a clean paper (not plastic) bag or wrapped in a clean bedsheet. Leave sheets/towels at the scene of the incident and police will collect them. Typically, police will be called to the hospital to take any evidence, but it is up to you whether you wish to speak with them or file a criminal complaint.

Choose how to proceed. You have options. You can:

  1. do nothing until you are ready,
  2. pursue resolution through WIT’s Title IX process, and/or
  3. initiate criminal proceedings, and/or
  4. initiate a civil process against the perpetrator.

You may pursue whichever combination of options is best for you. If you pursue resolution through WIT, your options can include a formal response, informal resolution, and/or supportive measures. If you wish to have an incident investigated and resolved by WIT, you should contact the Title IX Coordinator. Employees should contact either Human Resources or the Title IX Coordinator. If you choose to pursue legal or criminal options, you can contact Campus Safety or Law Enforcement on your own or with support from Campus Safety or the Title IX Coordinator.
