Taking the Mystery Out of Seed Starting

Starting plants from seed gives you a lot more plant variety options than commonly found at your local garden center or big box store, and can save you a lot of money. Growing plants from seed is satisfying and lots of fun, but it can also be intimidating. The conflicting information about seed starting online can be confusing and misleading. At the end of this class, you will have the skills and confidence to start your own garden plants from seed.

Our expert instructor, Laurie Taylor, Iowa Master Gardener, owner of Living Treasures Flower Farm, and manager of Southdale Garden Center, starts thousands of plants from seed each year for her farm and Southdale. You will learn several methods of seed starting, what supplies are needed to successfully and inexpensively start seeds, Laurie’s favorite seed sources, and many tips and tricks. At the end of class, you will be able to take home your choice of future flower, veggie, or herb plants we started in class, plants Laurie has started before class, and/or packets of seeds.
