Project Success FAQs

Project SUCCESS is a 4+ transition program for students with IEPs.  The program is located on the Western Iowa Tech Community College campus and it provides academic and skill building support designed to guide students toward college independence.
-Students in the program are referred by their high school IEP team.  The process must be finished before you would graduate high school.
- You need to be between the ages of 17 and 21.
- You have to have the desire to go to college.
Project SUCCESS teaches classes every semester that are designed to help you be a stronger student.  We teach things like study skills, test taking skills, teamwork, communication, problem solving, organization, prioritization, money management, career prep, and many other topics.  We also have a supported study hall where we help students understand their assignments.
Project SUCCESS is a special education program and qualifies as a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).  When an IEP team refers a student to the program, they agree to continue supporting you just like they did during your regular K-12 education.
As a Project SUCCESS student, you can choose any program offered at Western Iowa Tech.  Some programs have entrance requirements, like nursing, and you have to meet the same requirements as any other student to join a program like that.

Yes, we do require regular in-person attendance.  The classes we teach have a lot of interactive lessons and most of the popular degree fields are hands-on.  We have also noticed that students do better when they have an instructor that they get to work with every week.
Yes, you do need to continue with your IEP to be part of Project SUCCESS.  That is why we need your high school team to refer you to the program.  If you do not have an IEP, or have finished high school, and you want more support at college, please consider our LIFE Bridge program.
Students in Project SUCCESS have typically finished their high school class requirements.  That means you have earned your diploma, but your school has to hold onto it while you are in Project SUCCESS so they can continue to support your transition to college.  When you finish Project SUCCESS, you will get your high school diploma.
Project SUCCESS is a special education program, which means its length depends on each student’s needs.  Students may stay in the program through the school year that they turn 21, but many students gain the skills they need to finish college on their own before then.  The average program length is two school years.
