Since 2017, students and instructors from Western Iowa Tech's Auto Technology and Auto Body programs have built a custom vehicle nearly every year for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. In 2025, their 1972 Chevrolet K5 Blazer was named one of Car and Driver's "10 Coolest, Craziest Cars of SEMA," earning national attention and putting the students on a level with industry professionals. Thirty-two students from the automotive programs were able to attend the SEMA show, network with industry professionals, and showcase the vehicle they built.
The K5 stood out for its craftsmanship and design. Car and Driver also noted the humility and pride of the student team, showing how real-world projects teach our WITCC students technical skills, teamwork, and problem-solving.
The project was made possible through partnerships with companies such as Cosmo Tires, Magnaflow, FiTech, Skyjacker Suspensions, Dakota Digital, and US Mag Wheels. Their support lets students work with modern technologies while building industry connections.
The impact extended beyond the shop as WITCC Mass Communications students documented the build in a professionally produced news segment as a part of their weekly live student-produced YouTube show, WITtv. Together, the project illustrates the College's commitment to experiential learning, cross-program collaboration, and preparing students for workforce success.
