Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) students gained hands-on experience while serving the community through partnerships with the Briar Cliff University Doctor of Physical Therapy program, Siouxland District Health, and the All Abilities Coalition. In January, students volunteered at an All Abilities Day at Cone Park, helping participants with ice skating and adaptive winter activities. Students also worked with the College’s Lifelong Learning program to offer fall prevention screenings and teach Lifelong Learners how to use the circuit equipment around the WITCC track.
In March 2025, in coordination with the Briar Cliff University Doctor of Physical Therapy program, the PTA program hosted its annual Interprofessional Education Collaboration (IPEC) Day, which welcomed nearly 100 students from WITCC, USD, Minnesota West, Briar Cliff, and Morningside. Students work within interdisciplinary teams to learn how to work through a simulated case scenario. Half of the teams focused on care during a hospital stay, while the other half examined long-term care needs after discharge. Teams then shared out, allowing students to see how different roles contribute to patient outcomes and continuity of care. The experience gives students a realistic look at how healthcare teams communicate and collaborate in practice.
During the fall 2025 semester, the program partnered with Siouxland District Health and the Briar Cliff University Doctor of Physical Therapy program to offer fall risk screenings at a local HUD housing complex. Angela Drent, Health Promotion Specialist with Siouxland District Health and a member of the PTA Advisory Board, helped connect the program with the community after learning about the Lifelong Learning screenings.
The program also continues to work with the Briar Cliff University Doctor of Physical Therapy program through their Pro Bono Clinic providing physical therapy services to underinsured or uninsured members of the community.
The PTA program also celebrated 30 years since graduating its first class in 1995. The program continues to be impressive with a 100% job placement rate within one year of graduating from the program and obtaining licensure.
