WITCC’s Audio, Video, and Broadcasting program reached an exciting milestone with the launch of KWSR-LP 94.3 FM, a student-run radio station that brings hands-on learning to life while amplifying student voices across Siouxland. The station was made possible through a grant from the Gilchrist Foundation and community partnerships.
The launch of KWSR-LP was spearheaded by Instructional Program Coordinator Chris Mansfield and Audio, Video, and Broadcasting Instructor Mike Jones, whose vision and leadership helped turn the idea of a student-run station into a reality. With support and technical guidance from Siouxland Public Media, students moved from concept to broadcast, gaining experience in station setup, programming, and operations.
Broadcasting 24 hours a day, KWSR-LP serves as a real-world learning lab. Students manage on-air hosting, production, music selection, and station logistics, developing technical skills, creativity, and confidence as they prepare for careers in broadcasting, journalism, digital media, and communications.
The station’s official ribbon-cutting, held on October 3 in celebration of College Radio Day, was a proud moment for the College and the Siouxland community. Students took over the airwaves with a live broadcast throughout the day, joined by community partners, the Siouxland Chamber, and WITCC’s Culinary Arts students, whose support helped make the celebration a success.
KWSR-LP gives students a place to learn by doing, find their voices, and bring the sounds, stories, and creativity of the classroom to the Siouxland airwaves.
