Western Iowa Tech Community College (WIT) will welcome area youth in grades 6 - 8 to campus for Culinary Camp, a four-day hands-on experience taking place July 27 - 30. Hosted by the college's Culinary Arts program, the camp gives young learners the opportunity to roll up their sleeves, sharpen their kitchen skills, and discover the creativity behind great food.
Throughout the four-day camp, participants will explore fundamental culinary techniques in a professional kitchen. Students will gain experience in everything from baking and cooking to food preparation and kitchen safety, all while learning the fundamentals of teamwork and creating meals from scratch.
"We want students to leave with more than a full stomach," said Chef Michael Gasaway, Administrative Program Coordinator for Culinary Arts. "We want them to leave with new skills, new confidence, and a few recipes they're excited to make again at home."
Throughout the week, campers will work alongside WIT culinary faculty and student assistants to prepare a variety of recipes while exploring different cooking methods. Past camps have featured everything from practicing knife skills by creating fresh fruit baskets to making homemade pasta and meatballs, cookie skillets, and specialty drinks. While some favorite activities return each year, new recipes and challenges keep the experience fresh.
By the end of the week, participants will leave with new culinary skills, recipes to recreate at home, and the confidence to keep exploring in the kitchen.
