Western Iowa Tech Community College (WIT) welcomed youth in grades 6–8 to its Cherokee campus for a two-day Culinary Camp, held July 20 and July 22, designed to spark creativity and confidence in the kitchen. The camp was split between WIT's Cherokee and Sioux City campuses, giving students a well-rounded and exciting culinary experience.

Hosted by the college's Culinary Arts program, the camp gives students hands-on experience with fundamental cooking techniques, including baking, boiling, cutting, and chilling. Participants will explore kitchen safety, food prep skills, and teamwork in a fun, engaging environment.

"This camp was about more than recipes. It was about building skills, confidence, and curiosity," said Chef Michael Gasaway, Administrative Program Coordinator for Culinary Arts. "We enjoyed welcoming students into the kitchen and giving them a real taste of what it's like to create something from scratch."

The split schedule allows students to enjoy both the convenience of learning close to home in Cherokee on July 20 and the opportunity to experience a larger-scale, professional kitchen at the Sioux City campus on July 22. Each day offers new opportunities to learn, experiment, and discover the joy of food.
