Western Iowa Tech was founded in 1966 in Sioux City, and over subsequent years opened other sites in Cherokee, Denison, Mapleton and Le Mars.

Since 1966, Western Iowa Tech has grown alongside the communities we serve. What began with a vision to provide accessible career and technical education has grown into a comprehensive community college serving students, businesses, and communities across western Iowa and beyond.

Western Iowa Tech Community College hosted Kosovo’s ambassador to the United States, Ilir Dugolli, for a presentation on Kosovo’s history and its ties to Sioux City’s sister city, Gjilan. The event, organized by the Sioux City Public Library’s History at High Noon series, highlighted Kosovo’s 2008 independence, its U.S.-modeled government, and Iowa troops’ role in supporting safety there.

Recent changes to federal financial aid regulations under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) will impact federal student loans, Parent PLUS Loans, and Federal Pell Grant eligibility beginning July 1, 2026. Students and families should be aware of these updates as they plan for future semesters and complete the FAFSA process.

The Spring 2026 graduating class includes students from 137 cities and towns, 20 states, and 6 countries, reflecting the diverse communities served by the College. An asterisk (*) denotes students graduating with honors.
