Academic Programs

Chemistry Emphasis

Associate of Science Degree
Program Description
Sioux City Campus

The Chemistry program provides a strong foundation in the principles of chemistry, mathematics, and physics for those students who plan to earn a baccalaureate degree in chemistry or other majors requiring a chemistry background. Laboratory and lecture courses are designed to develop the analytical and synthesizing skills necessary to continue in upper-level studies.

The curriculum is sufficiently flexible to meet the needs of students with the following goals: industrial research and development, environmental research, liberal arts background for medical and allied health professions, secondary teaching of chemistry, or chemical engineering. Prospective students should have a strong background in math, science and writing skills, including two years of algebra, one year of geometry, one-half year of trigonometry, and one year of a laboratory science (physics or chemistry preferred).

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of chemists and materials scientists is expected to grow 9 percent over the 2006-16 decade.
