WITCC COVID-19 Updates

April 2, 2020

In an effort to maintain the health of its students and employees, Western Iowa Tech Community College will extend online format learning for the remainder of the semester and the Sioux City, Cherokee, and Denison campuses will remain closed to the general public.

  • Support services including tutoring, counseling, disability services and more are available for students. A list of resources and departmental contacts can be found on this site.
  • Residence halls will remain open to students who wish to stay on-campus and food service will continue to be provided.
  • Only designated personnel will be allowed on campus through May 14. All other employees will continue to work from home.
  • The spring graduation ceremony scheduled for May 14 will be moved to a virtual format.
  • All events scheduled to be held at Western Iowa Tech Community College are cancelled through May 14.

The COVID-19 pandemic has now been elevated to a State of Public Health Disaster Emergency by Governor Kim Reynolds. With this new development, Western Iowa Tech Community College is implementing the next phase of our pandemic plan:

The college campuses in Sioux City, Denison, and Cherokee will close to the general public starting on Wednesday, March 18 until Monday, April 13. All events scheduled to be held at Western Iowa Tech Community College are cancelled until April 13.

Information for Students

  • All face-to-face classes, including labs, will be moved to a remote learning platform. Students will be notified of specific course plans via email by their instructor by Sunday, March 22.
  • Online courses will continue uninterrupted.
  • Web-based tutoring, counseling, and disability services will be available. Details on accessing these services will be provided via email.
  • Residence halls will remain open to students who wish to stay on-campus and food service will be provided.

Information for Employees

  • Instructors are to notify specific course plans to their students via email by Sunday, March 22.
  • Employees should report to work as planned March 18, 19, and 20. Starting on March 23, only designated personnel will be allowed on campus until April 13. During this time, all other employees are asked to work from home. Please coordinate details and job expectations with your supervisor. All full-time and regular part-time employees will be paid during this time.

It is important for you to understand that the college is still operating. Also note these plans are subject to change as WITCC will continue to follow the recommendations of public health officials. March 13, 2020

For Students

Spring Break has been extended until March 22. Classes will resume March 23. A majority of face-to-face classes will be held online. Faculty are using the week of March 16 to prepare for this transition. Students will receive specific class instructions from faculty via email by Sunday, March 23.

ESL/ELL Students

Spring break for ESL/ELL students has been extended until Sunday, March 22. Starting on Monday, March 23, ESL/ELL classes will resume and be held through a combination of online classes via Remind, and texts, phone calls, and/or email. Your teacher will contact you with instructions and guidance for your class by text or phone call by Sunday, March 22. In an effort to support public health and minimize the spread of COVID-19 through social distancing, Western Iowa Tech Community College will extend Spring Break for students through Sunday March 22 and will transition many of its face-to-face classes to online classes beginning March 23. Select lab-based, hands-on courses will meet as scheduled starting on March 23 in a face-to-face format. Students should refer to their email several times a day as instructors will be sending out specific guidance regarding their classes. WITCC employees will continue to work as scheduled and campuses will remain open. We want to emphasize there are no identified cases of COVID-19 at Western Iowa Tech Community College. These measures are being put into place to protect the health and safety of our students, staff and faculty.

Information for Students & Families

WITCC will communicate instructions and announcements via email. Students should check their email several times a day to receive updates.

Face-to-face classes are cancelled for students on March 16 through March 22 as part of spring break extension.

Residence halls and dining services will continue to be open and available for students who choose to remain on campus.

Starting on Monday, March 23 many face-to-face classes will meet online until further notice. Online courses currently running will continue without interruption.

Select lab-based, hands-on courses will meet as scheduled after March 22 in a face-to-face format. Students will receive specific guidance from their instructor via email by Sunday, March 22.

Students who are scheduled for active learning experiences such as internships and clinicals should check with their instructors for further instruction.

High school students taking college courses (including the Sioux City Community Schools Career Academy) should follow their school's plan. Concurrent enrollment students taking WITCC online courses will have no interruptions. Concurrent enrollment students taking face-to-face classes at WITCC will receive instructions from their instructors.

Information for Employees

Employees will continue to report to work as scheduled. Faculty will work with their supervisor to plan and coordinate the transition to online courses and communicate with students. WITCC campuses will remain open and operational.

Travel

The college is suspending all international travel through the end of the semester. College-sponsored domestic travel for faculty, staff, and students are being reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Events

In an effort to limit large groups of people on campus, all events and activities scheduled in the month of March have been cancelled, including Lifelong Learning classes and events, student activities, recruitment events, and external events held on campus.
