Sioux City True Crime Files
Thu. Sep. 05
-Sun. Sep. 01
11:00 AM - 12:30 PMLocation: Cargill Auditorium Description: In the past few years, there has been a significant surge in society's fascination with true crime. It seems that humans are inherently drawn to stories that are more bizarre and shocking than anything fiction could conjure. Accounts of murder often captivate our attention and compel us to unravel the puzzle, seeking to understand what drives a criminal to commit such heinous acts and how we can safeguard ourselves and our loved ones. Even more intriguing may be those that occur right in your own community. Contrary to popular belief, violent crimes and horrific homicides do not solely occur in major cities. Sioux City has a long history of crime and murder, dating back to its very foundation. Sarah Enright, Local History Librarian Specialist at the Sioux City Public Library and a true crime fan herself, uses the library's resources, such as archived newspaper clippings, microfilm, databases, and web resources, to construct detailed narratives of local cases encompassing historic homicides, cold cases, and missing persons. Attendees will be encouraged to share their memories and comments as the cases are discussed. DR. ROBERT E. DUNKER LEADERSHIP SERIES
DR. ROBERT E. DUNKER LEADERSHIP SERIES
Mon. Nov. 04
-Mon. Nov. 11
12:00 PM - 2:00 PMLocation: Cargill Auditorium Description: The Robert E. Dunker Leadership Lectures examine and discuss examples of leadership displayed in life by prominent people in America, both nationally and locally. This series is sponsored by and named in honor of Dr. Robert E. Dunker, President Emeritus of Western Iowa Tech Community College, founder of The Institute for Lifelong Learning, and one of Western Iowa Tech's earliest graduates. This series is about people whose actions have impacted the world. These individuals made national news with perseverance, persistence, and sacrifice. Today the reason behind their fame is obscured by the results. We know they succeeded or failed. How can we learn from their example if we don't know what they did or why they did it? Historian Russ Gifford will introduce us to the person behind the headlines, their motives, their methods, and what traits allowed them to exercise leadership and achieve their fame! Standing Bear and the Arc of Justice - In this session we will examine the unique story of one man determined to lead his people to freedom. Standing Bear did not take up arms, nor did he engage in acts of terrorism. He stood up for the rights of his people, and through his actions and quiet determination, changed his world and the opportunities for all Native Americans. Clara Barton – An Angel of Mercy with a Vision We all know the story of Clara Barton. She created the Red Cross, right? Done deal! In reality, Barton's story is one of repeatedly standing up to authority and, in her quiet determination, making things happen by making a difference. Lifelong Learning Classes

SIOUX CITY AND THE PACIFIC WAR 1941-1945
SIOUX CITY AND THE PACIFIC WAR 1941-1945
Thu. Nov. 21
11:00 AM - 12:30 PMLocation: Cargill Auditorium Description: Although World War II began in Europe with the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, the United States refused to commit its armed forces to the conflict until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Once committed, the U. S. military shared the burden of war against Nazi Germany with the Soviet Union and Great Britain. In the Pacific, however, American forces bore most of the weight of the war with Japan. While the U. S. Army and Army Air Corps took the lead in Europe, leadership in the Pacific Theater was assigned to the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps. Sioux City area residents were involved in every major engagement of the Pacific War from the Battle of Midway and the fight for Guadalcanal in 1942 to the Battle of Iwo Jima and the recapture of the Philippines in 1945. Join Matt Anderson for an overview of the Pacific campaign and accounts of the contributions made by local people.
