Todd has not only been a pillar of the community but also a transformative force in the lives of young learners. His tireless advocacy, mentorship, and belief in the potential of every student have helped turn dreams into degrees and challenges into triumphs. He began his TRIO-Upward Bound journey at Briar Cliff College and has served as a Spanish instructor for WITCC's Upward Bound residential summer program since 2013.
"Students spend six weeks of their summer learning math, science, English, and Spanish, not because they have to, but because they want to. They choose us," said Nancy Ramos, Upward Bound Educational Coordinator. "It's instructors like Todd who make that choice worthwhile."
Siefker's Spanish curriculum emphasizes not only language acquisition but also cultural connection and empathy. His classroom includes students at varying levels of proficiency - from beginners to fluent speakers. Through intentional lesson design and creative instruction, he meets students where they are and challenges them to grow.
"It's teachers like Todd that make summer camp work," said Katherinne Lehmann, Director of Upward Bound and Talent Search. "I've seen his students laughing, learning, and fully immersed in his classroom. He radiates unconditional positive regard and brings it into every room he enters."
Known affectionately as "Profe," a Spanish term of respect for a teacher (short for "profesor"), Siefker is praised by students for his personal warmth and dedication. "I love that Profe had a positive attitude every day," said Leila Jaime, a student at Denison High School. "No matter how you were feeling, he always made you feel a little better and took time to connect with us."
In addition to his work with TRIO, Siefker teaches Spanish at West High School and the Sioux City Career Academy, where he has led courses such as AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Spanish Literature and Culture, and Spanish II. He engages students with dynamic projects, including recording readings for Spanish-speaking children in detention centers, emphasizing the human connection behind the language.
In 2021, Siefker was named Teacher of the Year by the Sioux City Community School District, recognizing his exemplary contributions to education. Whether he is performing raps and poetry in Spanish, coaching freshman boys' basketball and girls' tennis, or volunteering his time, he consistently models educational leadership, cultural humility, and compassion.
The Western Iowa Tech Upward Bound program, its students, and the wider community extend their gratitude to Todd Siefker for his twenty years of service and enduring impact. His legacy is one of excellence, inclusion, and deep commitment to student success.
