The Nursing Assistant course is designed to provide students with the fundamental skills needed to deliver safe, effective patient care in a healthcare setting. Students will learn: Basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, infection control and safety measures, personal and physical care skills, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), supporting individuals through the rehabilitation process, and much more.

This program prepares students to become valuable members of the healthcare team. Upon successful completion, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the State of Iowa CNA certification exam.

Western Iowa Tech offers several nursing programs for students who wish to continue their education after completing the Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate and gaining experience as a CNA.

Nursing - PN Diploma (Practical Nursing)

After completing the CNA certificate or working as a CNA, students may enroll in the Practical Nursing (PN) Diploma program.

  • Length: 1 year
  • Locations: Sioux City, Denison, Cherokee, and Hybrid
    • Hybrid option is partially online and partially in Sioux City
    • Cherokee and Hybrid options have a fall-only start

Graduates are prepared to take the NCLEX-PN exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Nursing - ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing)

After becoming an LPN, students may progress into the second year of training through the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program.

  • Length: 1 year
  • Locations: Sioux City, Denison, and Hybrid 
    • Hybrid option is partially online and partially in Sioux City
    • Fall-only start

Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam to become a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Students must have applied to Western Iowa Tech within the past two years to register for the Nursing Assistant program.
  • Please allow 24 hours for your college application to process before scheduling an appointment with an advisor.

Entrance Requirements

  • All students must submit to a criminal and abuse background check and be cleared before starting their program clinical experience.
  • Students will also be required to complete health forms including a TB (tuberculosis) screening. These can be completed free of charge at the Comet Clinic. 
  • All students must sign a confidentiality agreement before beginning their clinical experience.
  • All students must purchase a uniform before beginning their clinical experience. The uniform will consist of ceil blue scrub shirt and pants, analog watch, and a pair of predominantly white, nonporous shoes. 

Clinical Participation Requirements

Western Iowa Tech uses external affiliated agencies for clinical experiences for our students. Affiliated agencies may impose requirements for students in order that they be allowed access to clinical experience.

  • Students may be required to provide the following information to external affiliated agencies:
    • Criminal and Abuse Background Checks
    • Drug Test
    • Mandatory Reporter Trainings 
    • CPR (BLS)
  • The student should maintain copies of the documents listed above. Affiliating agencies may require the student to provide a copy of the documentation.
  • Unprofessional conduct, breach of confidentiality, or performing duties beyond the scope of practice or academic preparation is grounds for immediate removal from the clinical site. Removal will result in failing clinical and may include disciplinary action.
