If you choose to withdraw your enrollment at Western Iowa Tech, there may be consequences for your federal financial aid award and eligibility status.

  • If you miss the deadlines to drop or withdraw, you might not get a refund for the tuition and fees you already paid.
  • If you accepted federal student financial aid, you may need to pay back some or all of those funds.
  • If you do not pay any balances owed, you may be ineligible for future federal financial aid.

Be sure to keep a copy of all the correspondence you receive from Western Iowa Tech about your financial aid and your tuition payments. Before you withdraw, talk to the Student Financial Services team - they will help you understand your obligations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Withdrawing

What does it mean to withdraw from Western Iowa Tech?

Withdrawal is defined as dropping all classes and having no credit hours for a given semester.

What are the consequences of withdrawing?

If you received federal financial assistance, your financial aid may be adjusted based on the date of official or unofficial withdrawal.

You can initiate your withdrawal process in one of 3 ways:

  • Option 1: Log in to MyWIT. Go to Academics > Student Planning to submit your withdrawal form online.
  • Option 2: Submit a written notice of total withdrawal at a Registration Center. A signed official withdrawal form or other written notice with the student’s signature constitutes a written notice.
  • Option 3: Call the Registration Center at 712.274.6404 to declare your intent to withdraw from all courses. You must provide all the information requested by the registration clerk.

The date of your official withdrawal will be the date your notice or your phone call is received by the Registration Center.

You will be considered to have unofficially withdrawn when:

  • You do not complete the official withdrawal process; AND
  • Your instructors report that you are no longer attending classes OR you fail all of your classes OR you never participate in your classes.

Your unofficial withdrawal date will be based on class participation records provided by your instructor(s).

For online courses, you must actively participate in the course. If necessary, your instructor can provide proof of participation. Ask your instructor(s) to email studentrecords@witcc.edu stating the last date you participated in an academically related activity that was part of the course instruction.

The American taxpayers have entered into an agreement with you by investing tax dollars in grants and loans for your education at Western Iowa Tech. This investment places a serious responsibility on you to complete your education according to the agreement with the American taxpayers.

If you fail to complete your education, the American taxpayers are entitled to receive back (from you) a portion of their investment.

The WIT Financial Aid Office will calculate how much you owe based on your official or unofficial withdrawal date and how many classes you enrolled in. You can find the procedure we use to calculate this amount in the college catalog: Financial Aid Refund Policy > Calculating Title IV Returns.

Western Iowa Tech will return this amount to the Department of Education on your behalf. You will then need to repay that amount to Western Iowa Tech.

You must contact the Student Accounts Office within 15 days of receiving notice to schedule repayment.

  • If you do not schedule repayment by the deadline, your account will be turned over to the US Department of Education for collection.
  • If your account is sent for collection, you will be ineligible for federal aid.
  • If you re-establish your eligibility, the Department of Education will notify Western Iowa Tech.

You can find additional details about these procedures in the college catalog: Financial Aid Refund Policy > Procedure for Repaying the U.S. Government.
