Western Iowa Tech Community College offers hands-on Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training designed to prepare you for a successful career in the trucking industry. Our comprehensive truck driving school combines classroom instruction with real behind-the-wheel training. You’ll learn everything from vehicle inspections and safety regulations to shifting, backing, and driving on city streets and highways. By the end of the program, you’ll be fully prepared to take your CDL skills test.

The course exceeds 160 hours consisting of both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel experience satisfying requirements determined by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations for entry-level driver training in accordance with 49 CFR 380.503.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old to drive commercially in Iowa and 21 years old to drive across state lines.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required.
  • Health Requirements: Students must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam and drug screening.
  • Reading/English Skills: Basic reading and communication skills are needed to understand safety regulations and testing materials. The ability to read and speak English is required for testing with the State DMV.
