Writing Just for Fun
5/01
Sioux City
WRITING JUST FOR FUN Are you interested in writing just for fun? Maybe you just want to indulge in something that you once loved years ago, but never had time for. Or do you feel you might have an undeveloped talent and need some guidance? If so, this is a great class for improving your everyday writing skills. Each class is separate so you can take just one or all of them! The class on memoir writing is in two parts but is designed to accommodate anyone who misses Part I. This season we have added two more fiction writing classes. Many people who have taken our fiction writing classes before are eager to progress to more advanced levels. For these new classes ? Fiction Writing Part 3 and Part 4 -- we require that you take Fiction Writing Part 1 and Part 2. Sometimes the only way to progress as a writer is to share work with others. So part of each class will be devoted to talking about what we write. This will be fun and informal! Instructor Joe Peschel is an outstanding instructor and has had wonderful evaluations from our members. He has been a freelance writer for many years and has had work published in the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, the Barnes & Noble Review, the Raleigh News, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Kansas City Star, the Charlotte Observer, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, as well as a variety of computer publications.1 Please bring a writing pad and pen or a laptop computer if you have one.

Mindfulness in Modern World
5/01
Sioux City
Mindfulness in the modern world is back this spring! This class offers a wonderful, relaxing way to reduce stress and promote wellbeing, healthy-living and self-discovery. Just like the comedy TV program Seinfeld - which ostensibly was about nothing - Mindfulness in the Modern World expects that you do almost nothing, and yet something funny happens anyway! Imagine that; doing nothing, having fun and learning at the same time! We'll be learning mindfulness, which is the art of being in the moment to the extent that every thought, feeling and sense we experience stands out like an island of calm in a sea of chaos. Mindfulness is about recognizing, understanding, calming and appreciating your own inner-dialogue. In return, we can look at the fun we will definitely have in this class while reducing stress and the associated benefits such as; weight loss, increased focus and peace of mind, calmness in the face of adversity, reduced reactivity, lowered risk of heart disease, decreased anxiety, lowered divorce rates and improved relationships. The list endless.there is no list of the potential benefits of learning mindfulness. Teachers, police and emergency first responders, doctors, people with attention disorders and so many others all use mindfulness to deal with the vagaries of this modern world. Becoming aware of the workings of our own minds sounds impractical doesn't it? Who needs a course on that?! OK then, let's see how long you can sit still and hold one thought without becoming distracted in your mind. Put this down - go ahead and try - we'll wait. Was it 10, 15 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute? For most of us, the mind - our own minds - are like untamed stallions. Sometimes it's called a monkey mind, jumping from anticipation to regret to worry to anxiety to guilt to joy in a matter of minutes. This inner dialogue is the fundamental basis for our outlook, emotions, self-esteem and reaction. But wait! If it's my mind, why can't I find the pause button? What if there is a pause button that none of your teachers or parents ever told you about as they worked to increase all the neurotransmitters and mental skills you developed in becoming who you are now? Mindfulness is that button. This class promises you a calming and fun environment, sitting with others, socializing and uncovering this simple gem of mindfulness, discovering where your life is really happening all along.
