Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) has awarded over 400 Last-Dollar Scholarships to students in the Fall of 2019, totaling an amount of $395,125. The Last-Dollar Scholarship, which is part of the Future Ready Iowa initiative announced by Gov. Kim Reynolds earlier this summer, is intended to cover tuition in programs that lead to high-demand jobs in Iowa. If other state and federal programs do not cover the entire cost of tuition for a postsecondary diploma or associate degree, the Last-Dollar Scholarship will fill the gap. In an announcement on Tuesday, Gov. Reynolds stated the scholarship provided more than 5,800 students with over $6.6 million in awards for this year’s fall semester.
“The Last-Dollar Scholarship is a tremendous opportunity to change the lives of people in our community,” says Dr. Terry Murrell, President of WITCC. “We know this scholarship will allow new high school graduates to receive a college education without accruing crippling debt. It will also benefit adults who have ever thought about going back to school to further their career. There is now a scholarship that alleviates some of the financial burden and provides a straight path to growing, in-demand jobs in Siouxland.”
The scholarship covers tuition for over 30 WITCC programs in areas including agriculture, health administration, computers and information technology, construction and trades, culinary, law enforcement, and health care. WITCC awarded 407 scholarships this Fall—81 to recent high school graduates and 326 to adults returning to school. The top three scholarship-eligible programs were Nursing, Police Science and Corrections, and Networking Administration and Security.
“We have been hearing from scholarship recipients, and their stories are touching,” says Murrell. “We have heard from first generation students who are the only person in their family to attend college. We have heard from unemployed workers in our rural areas who want to find a better job. We have also heard from single mothers who are trying to make a better life for their children. This scholarship is doing all these things and more.”
