Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) in partnership with Verizon is excited to be hosting the “Verizon Innovative Learning Program for Girls in Tech” summer day camp.
La-Tonia Middleton, a key leader on the Verizon Foundation, with WITCC staff will be kicking off this event and welcoming camp participants to this exciting program Monday, June 12 at 9 a.m. in the Cargill Auditorium at WITCC’s Sioux City campus.
This camp is a tuition free STEM program for 50 middle school girls that runs June 12–30 at WITCC. Camp participants will attend hands-on classes for coding, design thinking, social entrepreneurship, storytelling, augmented reality and more. Classes are Monday-Friday during summer camp and one Saturday a month throughout the year. Each participant will also receive an iPad to keep and free internet access for a year. There is no cost to the student or their families and includes daily lunch and transportation.
This camp is part of Verizon’s Innovative Learning program and their #weneedmore campaign. We need more young girls involved in science, technology, engineering and math for their benefit and because the world needs them — their brains, their creativity and their experiences — to create amazing solutions that will make our world a better place.
The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) applied to participate in the Verizon Innovative Learning program, whereby the NACCE approached WITCC to host this partnership program with Verizon. WITCC is one of only five colleges in the country offering this camp and was chosen for being a cutting-edge community college that can provide the advanced technology, academic support and resources needed for these young girls to strive during camp.
