National Awards For Beta Zeta Mu

Western Iowa Tech Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (honor society for community colleges), Beta Zeta Mu, received top honors and awards at the Regional Convention this past February and continued to receive top awards for their contributions and projects at the national level during the society’s National Phi Theta Kappa Convention on April 6–8, 2017 in Nashville, TN. Honors and awards included the following:

  • Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Chapter (only 33 chapters out of 1300 Chapters received this national award)
  • Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Theme and Honors In Action (only 24 out of 1300 Chapters received this national award) 
  • Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Honors Officer Award: Abbie Ferreira
  • Two WITCC students received the Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Regional Officer Team: Kevin Miller and Elizabeth Wantland. This award is given to only three regions out of 29 Regions nationally.
  • Sima Dabir was awarded the Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Regional Coordinator. This is awarded to only three of 29 regional coordinators
  • Five Star Chapter Development
  • Phi Theta Kappa International Distinguished Regional
  • Phi Theta Kappa International Regional Milestone (only three out of 29 Regions received this award)
  • Phi Theta Kappa International Reach award
  • WITCC student, Tad Dorsey was awarded the Coca Cola Gold Scholarship. The only Gold Scholar from 53 nominees in the Iowa region.

Many of these awards stem from the program’s “Honors in Action” project and the students’ outstanding motivation and execution in the programming this past year.

PTK hosted its annual convocation on “Critical Issues in Mental Health for Siouxland and Beyond” last November. The idea arose from PTK student interest in the staggering numbers of homeless in Siouxland and the ways mental health, substance abuse and poverty tie into the numbers.  The convocation consisted of expert panel members sharing their insights through
