Sioux City Brews
Thu. Sep. 04
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: In his presentation titled, Sioux City
Brews, Matt Anderson, Curator
of History at the Sioux City Public
Museum, will trace the history of
brewing in Sioux City back to 1860
when Rudolph Selzer established
Northwest Iowa's first brewery. With
the notable exception of periods when
state or federal law prohibited the
manufacture of alcoholic beverages,
brewing was a significant component
of Sioux City's industrial economy
between 1860 and 1960. Brewing
re-emerged in 1998 with the opening
of Sioux City's first microbrewery.
Today, local beer enthusiasts enjoy
the products of three small local
breweries in Sioux City, along with
those of microbreweries in LeMars,
Iowa, and Jefferson, South Dakota.

The Private Eye: Travis McGee
Mon. Sep. 08
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Continuing our look at the development of the uniquely American Private Detective novel. As the 1960s dawned, the spy was in, and the private eye
was out. But hard boiled PI's still populated the magazine rack, from Shell Scott to Mike Shayne, each with a tongue planted firmly in their cheek. Spy, sci-fi, and yes, comic books had come to dominate book spinners and magazine racks that once were the domain of hardboiled private eyes and westerns. Was there room for a serious private eye story?
Into this morass wandered Travis McGee - a lean, windburned, 6 foot something of a man who seemed to know his way around - but avoided getting too involved in the modern world that was being born in the post 1950s. The setting may be Florida instead of LA, but McGee was very much Sam Spade crossed with Philip Marlowe. Written by John D. MacDonald, the action is fast. McGee - and MacDonald - saw the go-go 1960s much as Hammett saw the roaring 1920s - a time filled with sucker traps. He never lacked for clients, as few people were paying attention until it was too late.
Join me as we follow the character and the stories Lee Child listed as the inspiration for his Jack Reacher character!

1876 the American Centennial and the First Stolen Election?
Mon. Sep. 15
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: 1876 was the 100th anniversary of the American Experiment in self-government. It was a heady time for America. The Civil War was in the past. The Industrial Revolution was changing business, with major factories using the benefits of steam power to create massive operations creating goods. These factories needed workers, and the urban population was growing rapidly. Everything was changing as the country celebrated its 100th birthday.
But the election of 1876 would not be a celebration. A nasty dispute over the results of the Electoral College developed when it appeared that Tilden, a New York City Democrat who had won the popular vote had also won the Electoral College.
What, you don't remember a President Tilden? There is a reason for that: The Republican Party refused to recognize the victory and contested the results in three states – three states where the U.S. Army was still in control of the state government during the era of post-Civil War Reconstruction.
You may not know the story, but the details will sound amazingly familiar. What were the reasons for the protest? Who led the charge? What were the results? And what fallout followed this? And – why don't we know this story? Join me for an interesting look back at a little-known moment in American History!

Lewis Carroll and Alice in Wonderland
Wed. Sep. 17
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: You may have read "Alice in Wonderland" as a child. Or you may only know about Alice through animated film, live action film, or television shows. And you can't avoid knowing something about Alice through countless pop culture references. But reading "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" as an adult is a different and richer experience.
Older readers who come to the Alice stories will not only be delighted and amused at the wild characters and bizarre events but intrigued with subtle subtext and sly commentary that Lewis Carroll, the author, inserts into the classic story.
REACH Youth and Family Theatre is preparing a dramatization of this classic piece of literature and in anticipation of this we are going to explore the source material and the brilliant author who created it.

Colored Pencil
Sat. Sep. 20
-Sat. Oct. 11
12:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Location: C129
Description: While we will be studying the features of the human face, we will not be drawing a complete portrait. Randi Mackey will walk you through step-by-step creating facial features, eyes, nose, mouth and ears. You will learn the different pencil pressures, angles and sharpness, how to layer light over dark and how they apply to each feature. She will discuss the different techniques of creating the innocence of the young, the more mature of the middle-aged and the interesting lines of a life well-lived in the great-grands we all admire. If time allows, you will be able to practice some of the changes. Each day will progress through one feature. By the end of class, you will have experience and more expertise with each feature.
Randi's teaching style involves step-by-step group demonstrations followed by individual help. She makes the classroom experience relaxed and fun while introducing each technique used to create the textures needed to make these features realistic.
Randi is currently studying with internationally award-winning colored pencil artists Lisa Ann Watkins and Cynthia Knox.
This class is for all levels of experience. No need to have drawing skills to enjoy and have success in this class. Come be amazed at what you can create with colored pencils. You may even decide to try a full-face portrait by the end of class.

Mon. Sep. 22
-Mon. Oct. 06
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Looking back at a century since the 'war to end all wars' we will see how the US entry into the battles changed everything. America's finest hour on display – and that hour did not end with the end of the war. But we will also see how peace 'went wrong.'
We will also see our tortured choices as the Axis powers rearmed, and their attempt to re-write the results of 1918 by launching the second world war. We will look at that war, and see how America's leadership prevented a repeat of the mistakes from the end of WWI.
In the end, we will see the changes the choice of war made in Europe and the world over the following century.

Andrew Jackson: Presidential Hero, or the First American Monarch?
Mon. Oct. 13
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Description: The Presidential Elections of 1824 and 1828, spanning the 50-year anniversary of 1776, provided an extraordinary moment in American History - and it might not be the story you heard in school. In the election of 1824, on the eve of the 50th Anniversary of the American Revolution, Andrew Jackson, military hero but political outsider with a mercurial temper, outpolled the established Presidential heir apparent, John Quincy Adams. Gen. Jackson, the hero of the War of 1812, had won the popular vote and led in the Electoral College. But he did not get a majority of their ballots.
By the Constitution, the vote for President would be decided by the House of Representatives - each state getting one vote. The candidate who finished out of the running was the legislative genius and acknowledged master of the House. When it was Adams who carried the majority of the States, Jackson seethed. But when Adams then appointed Clay to the position of Secretary of State, Jackson charged an 'unholy alliance' had cheated the American people of their vote. Technically, the Electoral College had performed as it was intended: It acted as the final failsafe to prevent unqualified men or dangerous demagogues from becoming President and undermining the Republic. The Founders had feared 'the coming of the man on horseback' - the war hero with no understanding or respect of the Constitutional limit on the powers of the Presidency, but able to sway the public. Without a doubt, Jackson certainly met all these qualities. If the Electoral College did indeed act to protect the Presidency from Jackson, it failed miserably. Jackson spent the next four years charging that Clay had fixed the House vote in a quid pro quo arrangement for his Cabinet appointment. The Secretary of State position acted as the stepping-stone to the Presidency in the first 50 years of the Republic. When the vote of 1828 arrived, Jackson's voters did not leave the option to the Electoral College. He won an overwhelming majority. Not only was Adams tossed out, but Jackson would prove to be all the things his detractors feared and his followers loved. Victors write the histories, and in the years following his time in the White House, the schools taught us about the man who preserved the Union, and extended the vote to all white males, not only landowners. But he repeatedly engaged in acts not written in the Constitution, and some explicitly outlawed by it.
It is a story that may sound familiar today. Join me to hear how the story played out 200 years ago!

Sioux City True Crime Files
Wed. Oct. 29
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Although it may seem like violent crimes and horrific homicides have been more prevalent in recent decades and occur most often in major cities, that's not always true. Sioux City has seen its fair share of crime and murder, dating back to the late 1800s. In recent years, society has exploded with heightened levels of interest in the genre of true crime. Humans are naturally drawn to and have a morbid curiosity when it comes to tales that are "stranger than fiction." Sarah Enright, Local History Librarian Specialist at the Sioux City Public Library and a true crime fan herself, uses the library's resources, such as archived newspaper clippings, microfilm, databases, and web resources, to construct detailed narratives of local cases. This session will spotlight several historical cases. Attendees will be encouraged to share memories, theories, and comments as the cases are discussed.

Rock Around the Clock: Re-creating a Night on the Radio - New Year's Eve, 1963
Thu. Nov. 06
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: Join Russ Gifford and step into the time machine – the destination – New Year's Eve, 1963! We'll relive the hits from 1960 to 1963 to remember the 'second wave' of Rock n' Roll! This session is dedicated to the people that kept Rock n' Roll alive after the people that broke down the door in the 1950s had largely left the stage!
We will remember Rock's forgotten years before the Beatles arrived. We will spend time with teenage troubadours, folk minstrels, and girl groups galore! From Dion to the Shirelles, Bobby Vee to the Chiffons, and Gene Chandler to the Angels! Roy Orbison and Ricky Nelson! Ray Charles,
Chubby Checker, and let's not forget Dee Clark!
The record companies were pushing hard to create a new Elvis - forgetting that Elvis was ready and willing to take back the stage! Yet something new sounding like something gold were Peter, Paul, and Mary spinning tales, leading the rising folk groups that were making their way up the charts and into your hearts! We won't overlook the singers that weren't Rock - but dominated the airwaves anyway! Marty Robbins, anyone? Jimmy Dean? Johnny Horton? All had their moment on the dial during these great years! Join me to hear the doo wop dreamers and all the screamers! This is the History of Rock, Part 2: 1960 to 1963.

Don't Know Much About The U.S. Constitution
Mon. Nov. 17
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: Cargill Auditorium
Description: The emphasis in this discussion is on the document itself. What DOES it say? Traditionally, when talking about the Constitution, we spend our time telling the stories of the creation, the changes from the Articles of Confederation, and the compromises necessary to finally agree on a Constitution. These stories are important, and enlightening, and as intended, uplifting. It is an amazing achievement and has survived those who would destroy it for over 200 years. When we were young, it was said the reason the United States led the world was because the Constitution was a 'living document' and could change with the times. Ironically, though, since 1980 the discussions and arguments focus on the Founders' original intent. For example - for more than two decades - during the time of the Founders - the idea of using Federal government money for transportation projects was deemed totally outside the scope of the Constitution. And yet, if each state is a supreme power to itself - how do you build a bridge between two states? How does the Railroad get built? Or the Interstate system? This session will explore what is and what is not written into the Constitution. This time we will see not only the original reasoning, but the CHANGES as the times changed - and the results.
