Community Colleges

Iowa's community colleges meet the unique education, training, economic development and quality of life needs of the regions they serve.  Iowa community colleges provided over 8.2 million hours of education in 2013 to 340,789 credit and non-credit students.

Western Iowa Tech is meeting the unique needs of our region by:

  • Conferring 27% of construction degrees, 17% of health sciences degrees and 30% of all certificates statewide.
  • Leading the state in re-certification and re-licensure, and being fourth in non-credit hours.
  • Creating a welding program in Denison and supporting an internationally-recognized Phi Theta Kappa chapter.

To build on these successes, the Iowa Community College Trustees 2018 legislative priorities include:

State General Aid: Restore FY 2017 funding reductions and address the higher education funding disparity by increasing to raise the Iowa Community College state funding per pupil.

Local Community Support:  Provide locally elected Community College Boards the governance flexibility to access local support in its discretion to meet their communities' and business' worker training and economic development needs.

Workforce Training: Support the commitment to the Iowa Skilled Worker and Job Creation Fund for job creation and training.
