Western Iowa Tech provides training to successfully join a growing industry. This course teaches you how to safely climb broadcast and communication towers with little or no experience. We train using the Climber Training Standard (CTS) which is an industry certification from the National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE). All of our curriculum was built from the CTS and is continuously updated as regulations change.

Choices can be made from the following courses:

Authorized climber

The main objective of the authorized climber training is for you to understand the mechanics and performance of each item of equipment that would be required to use on the job.
12 contact hours total (8 classroom and 4 practical)

Competent climber

This course requires you to have already successfully completed the authorized climber course and also have 90 days of documented, full-time climbing experience as a prerequisite. The objectives for the competent climber course are to review, learn of any changes and participate in more depth discussions of the rules and regulations, and to assure you have the understanding, skill, and expertise to perform the duties and responsibilities of a competent climber. Hazard recognition and having the ability to mitigate those hazards are necessary skills to become a competent climber.
12 contact hours (8 classroom and 4 practical)

"Tower Systems, Inc. has been utilizing Western Iowa Tech Community College since 2003 for OSHA and fall protection training. Their qualified trainer's abilities to present OSHA regulations and safety practices has allowed us to reduce injuries and improve the safety culture within the company."
