Women and Full Citizenship
3/02-3/16
Sioux City
Most American history classes reduce the century-long struggle for women's rights to a footnote or a single event stating that the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. It was never just about the vote. It was never as simple as the passage of an amendment. The effort to achieve social democracy, economic equality, and political justice for 50% of the adults in America deserves notice and celebration. It was an effort. The women's movement required diligence and fortitude. It required suffrage by women to point out the larger suffering caused by the exclusion of women from the machinery that decided their fates. The equally determined counterview that women were either incapable or too delicate to engage in the rigors of politics prevented compromise. The prevailing thought process required men to protect the delicate and frail women. Yet by doing so, they consigned many women instead to sweat shops, saloons, and social poverty when their husbands became injured or left them behind. In the end, tens of thousands of people were moved to take to the streets, either to support or to challenge the radical idea that women should be able to vote and have a say in politics. When the Federal government refused to act, the subject would dominate state legislatures for more than a decade. How a dedicated group of women overcame this mindset is a rich story of great deeds and equally low setbacks. Join historian Russ Gifford as he explores this crucial effort in these two classes!

Mommy and Me Sing
3/23-5/11
Sioux City
Mommy and Me Sing: Making harmony at home A music class for parents and children (age two through pre-K) This class has been created especially for the younger generation. Come for the fun and stay for the education. All children are musical! They are born with an aptitude for music; this will diminish though, if it's not nurtured in the first nine years of life. According to leading early-childhood researcher Dr. Edwin E. Gordon, musical aptitude is in a developmental stage from birth to age nine. While a child can certainly learn musical skills such as fingerings, breathing, and note reading after age nine, how musical a person he or she is - how attuned his or her sense of pitch and rhythm is - is set for life by age nine. Gordon says the most effective way to nurture a child's tonal and rhythmic aptitude is to provide them with a rich environment of singing and moving. During weekly classes children and their caregiver(s) will participate in activities such as: Singing simple songs continuous movement Steady beat activities Playing simple instruments Rhymes and finger plays Tonal and rhythm patterns Your friendly instructor is Amanda Vande Zande, a mother of two and a music instructor at Western Iowa Tech. One child per registered adult.

Making Better Photographs
3/23-4/20
Sioux City
In the digital age taking photographs is much easier than it used to be. But that doesn't mean we all take better photographs. In this class, you will learn from a professional photographer how to dramatically improve your technique. Making better photographs involves making the image more compelling through various techniques such as creative lighting, composition, and design elements. But most importantly, it is learning to see the image before pressing the shutter button. In this five-week course, you will explore various compositional design elements such as the rule of thirds, leading lines, the use of silhouettes, and seeing shapes and patterns. The class will also explore the use of filters and various types of available lighting to achieve certain effects, which can include shooting on bright sunlit days, cloudy overcast days, in open shade and on rainy days. The class will discuss using appropriate lenses for photographing certain types of images such as landscapes and portraiture. But, as always, rules are made to be broken. And breaking some of these rules during the class will be encouraged! Students will shoot photos to share with other class members in the next class meeting. These will be based on simple assignments from the instructor that will allow students to explore new photographic ideas. Instructor Jerry Mennenga has worked for various daily newspaper publications for over 25 years in Illinois, Texas, Louisiana, California and Iowa. He has covered a variety of photographic assignments at these various publications and continues to make photographs simply for the fun and joy of it. He creates images for a blog he writes, www.lostinsiouxland.com.

America's Westward Expansion
3/23-4/27
Sioux City
This is a story of lore and legend, of fame and fortune, and of devastation and destruction  as we journey with those who crossed the Mississippi river as part of the greatest migration in human history! From 1820 to 1890, millions of people flowed into a vast countryside defined by the Louisiana Purchase, the Mexican Secession and the Northwest Agreement. Far different from the lands east of the Mississippi, these sparsely populated lands quickly provided clues to the rich resources they possessed. Rapidly outnumbering the native population, new states entered the Union, unsettling the delicate balance of the North and South. By the early 1840s, the population began pushing across the vast plains, jumping off from Independence, Missouri, to reach the fabled city of Santa Fe, or on to California via a more northerly route. All came in search of the golden farm lands or the life a new land offered. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in the newly acquired California produced an explosion of travelers with lines of wagons proclaiming California or Bust! in search of easy wealth waiting for people to simply scoop it out of the water! Millions left Independence  or St. Joseph, Missouri, everything they owned crammed into a wagon pulled by oxen, hitting the trail with huge hopes and fragile dreams. As steamboats  and railroads pushed nearer, later adventurers left from further north, making Nebraska City, in the Nebraska territory, their launch point. If the destination was California or north, all these trails led to their first extended stop at Ft. Kearney. From there, they passed the landmarks of Courthouse Rock, and Chimney Rock, as their overland journey pushed on to Ft. Laramie. They had to face mountains, desert, and weather to reach the promised riches of the mine fields stretching from California to Montana. Many recalled the brutal pain of the four-month passage, and the sacrifices made. For some, the trip ended in a swift and painful death due to cholera and tragic accidents along the trail. Others called it quits before they made it to their destinations, staying on in the area we consider home, the Great Plains within the Nebraska territories. For those who made the trip and persevered beyond the plains, the forbidding mountain ranges, and the arid lands to the big sky country of Montana, the Pacific coast of Oregon, or the fertile fields of California, it remained the adventure of their lifetime. We will follow in their footsteps as they break trails into history with their challenging passage to a new beginning. We will trace the various waves of different nationalities and their trials and triumphs. We will review the realities of the conflicts as the old inhabitants of the regions contested this onslaught of humanity. We will also see the massive undertaking  to reap the rich harvest of minerals in the new land, an un- precedented undertaking at that time! In the process, they rewrote the future of the continent and the country. Join historian Russ Gifford to relive the era and perhaps gain a new appreciation of the efforts and the sacrifices of the people and their time.

Smooth Sailing Medicare

Sioux City
SMOOTH SAILING THROUGH MEDICARE FOR NEW BENEFICIARIES Medicare is a complex system that can quickly swamp its beneficiaries. Chris Kuchta, a Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselor from Connections Arae Agency on Aging, will give a lively overview of Medicare and many of its options to help clear those murky waters of its alphabet soup (Parts A, B, C, D), supplements, advantage plans and other riptides such as the prescription drug donut hole that can pull you under! See how you or your loved one may lower the boom on Medicare costs by making annual drug plan comparisons, applying for federal and/or state benefits, or utilizing pharmaceutical assistance programs. Steer clear of the wounds caused by healthcare fraud and identity theft pirates. This will be a cruise you'll be delighted to take!
