Western Iowa Tech Community College graduated 248 students from its General Educational Development program May 23. The ceremony took place in the gymnasium of the Corporate College building on WITCC's Sioux City campus. The program's keynote speaker was Larry Wentz, news anchor for KCAU-TV, Channel 9. Other featured speakers were GED graduate Justin Van Roekel of Sioux City and Kerry Ogden of Moville, Iowa, who is the GED specialist for YouthBuild Sioux City. The GED certificates were presented by Bill Lyle, a member of the WITCC board of directors. The Western Iowa Tech Community College Board Scholarship was presented to Denise Sumabat of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, by Dr. Robert Dunker, WITCC president. Martin Reimer, Corporate College dean, introduced the speakers. Tricia Sutherland, associate dean of students, presented the GED Achievement Award to Heath Waddell of Sioux City. Pamela Woolridge, WITCC English as a Second Language coordinator, was the vocalist. The GED rigorously measures academic ability generally associated with four years of regular high school and provides the opportunity for graduates to pursue higher education and enhance career choices.
